DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in meter reading. An employee in this class is responsible for assigning meter routes; insuring that meter readers are familiar with work procedures and meters used within the system; and for handling more difficult customer problems. This class is similar to that of Meter Reader I in that the employee, in addition to the above, performs the duties of the Meter Reader I. Supervision is received form an administrative superior. Supervision is exercised over a number of employees. Direct supervision of subordinates is maintained only for purpose of correcting problems of inaccuracies and familiarization with routes. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Familiarizes new meter readers with departmental procedures; accompanies new meter readers on routes indicating locations of meters, types of meters, and how to read meters.

Instructs new meter readers on approach to be taken with customer complaints.

Reads domestic and commercial water meters and records readings.

May operate motor vehicle in performing duties on certain routes.

Discusses with customers complaints of high bills, disputed readings, and water pressure problems; suggests simple solutions as the situation requires.

For water meters, investigates leaks and waste by visual observation during readings or by checking water connections within residences, such as sinks and toilets; reports any problems to the maintenance section.

Assists with the maintenance of customer account books.

Reports unusual circumstances found during readings indicating possible tampering, defective or damaged meters, or excessive use of service.

Closes service, when indicated, for non-payment; may encourage customer payment to eliminate discontinuance.

Makes simple addition and subtraction computations to determine consumption, records consumption in a customer account book, and routes account numbers in new areas.

May determine number of "reads" per day as a minimum.

Good knowledge of the rules and regulations of the utility agency where employed.

Good knowledge of basic mathematics, primarily addition and subtraction.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.

Ability to make simple mathematical computations by the use of addition and subtraction.

Ability to supervise, assign and review the work of subordinates.

Ability to deal in an effective, yet courteous, manner with the customer and general public.

Ability to enter figures correctly and legibly.

Ability to follow simple oral or written instructions.

Ability to handle adverse situations involving animals.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:

One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Meter Reader I.

 

Open Competitive:

Two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, reading meters.
