DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for performing a variety of relatively unskilled maintenance, repair, and related activities assisting semi-skilled and skilled maintenance workers or trades staff. Such activities involve use of tools and equipment under the direct supervision of a higher skilled employee while learning the practical techniques and theoretical background of a maintenance trades function. Employees in this class do not exercise supervision. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Performs the heavier, less difficult, and more repetitive activities involving the use of elementary skills in one or a combination of mechanical and building trades type work.

Carries, holds, lifts, and places parts, equipment, and supplies.

Prepares surfaces and work areas for maintenance and repair work.

Uses hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing devices appropriate to maintenance and repair activity to which assigned.

Performs minor building maintenance and repair work.

May perform building cleaning and grounds keeping work.

May occasionally operate power drive equipment.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written direction.

Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment.

Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
None.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated.
