DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for serving subpoenas to individuals to appear in court, grand jury, hearings or felony trials. An employee in this position assists in locating persons who are witnesses to a criminal action. Supervision is received from the chief investigative staff member of the Department. Supervision is not exercised by an employee in this position. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Serves a trial court or grand jury summons upon an individual; personally delivers a subpoena to the person as directed.

Locates and distributes case files and legal papers throughout the judicial system as assigned.

Assists legal or investigative staff in the maintenance and control of evidence in criminal cases.

Provides assistance to investigative staff as needed (i.e., in obtaining documents).

May assist in locating witnesses who are hiding, giving false addresses, or have left no forwarding address; may interview neighbors for information.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Working knowledge of the use and function of a subpoena or summons in the legal process,

Working knowledge of street locations in Syracuse and the County of Onondaga.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to understand assignments with limited supervision.

Ability to locate addresses in the community.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Possession of an operator's license from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
