DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This work involves responsibility for supervising and carrying out an education program for residents of the Onondaga County Department of Correction. The program provides opportunities for inmates to participate in basic education, high school equivalency preparation, vocational education, lifeskills programs, health education, drug and alcohol education, and any other areas relating to the educational needs of the population. An employee in this class must exercise initiative in adapting programs to meet the situations and needs of individual residents. Activities are coordinated between the Department of Correction and community agencies; the employee coordinates the activities of professional staff of other agencies in developing and providing appropriate programs for inmates. General supervision is received from an administrative superior, usually the Director of Programs Services, and performance is reviewed through number of program participants, number of high school equivalency diplomas (GED) granted, responsiveness of programs to identified inmate needs and interests, compliance with Department policies and procedures, and a formal program evaluation process.
