DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

This is inspection work of ordinary difficulty involving responsibility for obtaining compliance with municipal regulations governing the maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, sidewalks and crossings. An employee in this class makes on‑site inspections to determine the existence of improper conditions and observes repair work in progress and upon completion. The work is performed under general supervision according to established procedures and standards with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of laborers but is an incidental activity. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Inspects streets, curbs, sidewalks, and crossings for evidence of defective conditions.

Determines and reports maintenance or repair work required to correct improper conditions.

Inspects the cutting and back filling of pavement or dirt street cuts.

Inspects work in progress to prevent undermining, settlement or unnecessary damage.

Directs property owners or city contractors to repair damage or defects.

Ensures that proper procedures are taken for the safety and protection of the public.

Checks miscellaneous complaints and contacts property owners.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the procedures, methods, materials, equipment and safety precautions used in the repair and maintenance of streets, curbs and sidewalks.

Good knowledge of the municipal regulations governing the proper condition, maintenance and repair of streets, curbs and sidewalks.

Ability to detect improper conditions and determine corrective measures required.

Ability to prepare written reports of inspections.

Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with the public.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Three (3) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the construction or repair of streets.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.
