DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for performing a variety of duties which relate to maintaining a sufficient quantity of supplies in firehouses. An important duty relates to the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) compressors to refill compressed air breathing cylinders for firefighters' breathing apparatus. The work of an employee in this class is distinct from Stock Clerk, Storekeeper and Inventory Control Supervisor classes because it performs only occasional work related to storekeeping or inventory control. The Fire Equipment Maintenance Superintendent exercises direct supervision over the work of an employee in this class. A Fire Equipment Supply Worker exercises no supervision over subordinate employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Refills compressed air breathing cylinders for firefighters' breathing apparatus; delivers and picks up these cylinders to and from all the Fire Stations throughout the City of Syracuse.
Operates high pressure compressor used to fill the air cylinders.
If needed, responds to emergency incidents to pick up empty or faulty air cylinders and distributes new ones to the firefighters at the scene.
Assists firefighters in hose/equipment retrieval and storage.
If needed, responds to emergency incidents at all times, day or night, year round.
Responds to calls received from Fire Control for various duties.
Makes deliveries of all types of firefighting equipment/apparatus to the Training and Maintenance Divisions of the Fire Department for repairs.
Makes pick‑ups and deliveries of firefighting equipment to be repaired and any new merchandise to and from vendors.
Assembles, packs and transport or arranges for transporting stored goods or in‑house supplies to all Fire Stations, such as paper towels, ammonia, cleaning solutions, etc.
Makes pick‑ups and delivers of paper work, including checks, correspondence, etc. to the Fire Chief's office, City Hall and all the fire stations.
Receives, stocks and maintains inventory levels of supplies and equipment.
Perform routine building cleaning tasks at the Training and Maintenance Divisions of the Fire Department.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of SCBA compressors.
Good knowledge of and familiarity with City of Syracuse streets and roadways and fire station locations.
Working knowledge of and familiarity with firefighting equipment and/or apparatus.
Ability to lift and carry medium to heavy supplies canisters and firefighting equipment.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One (1) year of work experience, or its part‑time equivalent, involving the operation of high pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) compressors.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of valid operator's license issued by the Now York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.
