DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

This is supervisory work involving responsibility to establish and maintain an effective maintenance program for fire stations, equipment and vehicles in the City of Syracuse Fire Department. Under general supervision, an incumbent in this class is also responsible for the preparation of plans and specifications for the purchase of fire apparatus and vehicles and for ascertaining that delivered items meet specifications. Considerable leeway is allowed for the exercise of independent judgment and action in resolving problems and attaining objectives. General assignments are received from the Chief of Fire. Work is reviewed through conferences and occasionally by observation upon completion. General supervision is exercised over an Assistant Superintendent and a number of skilled maintenance workers and mechanics. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Investigates requests and needs for repairs to apparatus and fire houses and reports same to Chief of Fire.

Notifies Chief of Fire as to the necessity of repairs and as to completion of work.

Plans and inspects maintenance work being performed.

Requisitions lumber, paint and various repair parts and inspects goods delivered.

Responds to all extra alarm fires and performs firefighting duties at all serious fires involving the department; assists in laying and tending hose lines and advancing them into buildings; assists in raising and tending ladders; may open roofs with gasoline powered saws; enters fire buildings to make emergency repairs and adjustments to power sources and equipment such as smoke ejectors, power saws, portable generators, drills and jack hammers; monitors the performance of engines, pumps, apparatus and hydraulic systems and makes adjustments when necessary.

Prepares plans and specifications for the purchase of fire apparatus and vehicles; inspects delivered items for compliance with specifications.

Conducts tests of fire apparatus.

Instructs personnel of department as to the proper maintenance of stations and operation of equipment.

Directs the compilation of records and preparation of reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade.

Thorough knowledge of building maintenance practices.

Thorough knowledge of firefighting equipment and the maintenance of such equipment.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of firefighting.

Ability to inspect the work of building trades workers.

Ability to layout and supervise the work of others.

Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Assistant Fire Equipment Maintenance Superintendent.
