DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

This is supervisory work involving responsibility to supervise and participate in the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus and stations, fire training school structure, maintenance shop and other fire properties. Under general supervision of the Fire Equipment Maintenance Superintendent, an incumbent in this class also assists in the preparation of plans and specifications for the purchase of fire apparatus and vehicles and performs required tests of such apparatus. Assignments are received both orally and in writing. Work is reviewed through conference, submission of reports and observation of equipment performance. Supervision is exercised over a number of skilled maintenance workers and mechanics. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Checks fire apparatus in field and shop for necessary repairs.

Supervises maintenance and repair work on equipment, including equipment painting, replacement of piston valves and springs, auto repair and engine replacement.

Supervises repair of all fire buildings, including repairs to boilers, plumbing and heating equipment.

Supervises painting and carpentry work on all buildings.

Supervises in rebuilding and modernizing of obsolete fire apparatus.

Responds to all general alarms and performs firefighting duties at all serious fires involving the department; assists in laying and tending hose lines and advancing them into buildings; assists in raising and tending ladders; may open roofs with gasoline powered saws; enters fire buildings to make emergency repairs and adjustments to power sources and equipment such as smoke ejectors, power saws, portable generators, drills and jack hammers; monitors the performance of engines, pumps, apparatus and hydraulic systems and makes adjustments when necessary.

Maintains personnel records.

Assists in the preparation of plans and specifications for the purchase of fire apparatus and equipment.

Conducts required tests of apparatus.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of firefighting equipment and the maintenance of such equipment.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of firefighting.

Good knowledge of building maintenance practices.

Good knowledge of standard automotive repair methods, terminology and tools of the trade.

Skill in the use of tools associated in the trade.

Ability to layout and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to work from plans and specifications.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

A. One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Fire Captain or Fire Lieutenant; or,

 

B. Four (4) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Firefighter.
