DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in fire fighting, fire prevention and emergency medical service activities of the Town of Tully Fire Department. Work is performed under the supervision of the Town Board. Direct supervision is exercised over the work of all Firefighters (EMT), Paramedics, and volunteer Firefighters. The incumbent performs administrative duties as directed, directs and participates at the fire scene, performs fire prevention duties and emergency medical service duties. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supervises the work of Firefighters (EMT), Paramedics and volunteer Firefighters including their daily work activities, fire fighting duties, and emergency medical services; creates work schedules and personnel scheduling procedures and reviews and approves time sheets.

Evaluates and prepares requests for equipment, repairs, supplies, training courses, and conferences.

At a fire scene, directs the work of the firefighters including assignment of lay out, connection of hose and nozzle, raising of ladders, ventilation, turning water on and off, inspecting property at the scene to prevent re-ignition and performing salvage.

Supervises and inspects the checking, cleaning and replacement of tools and equipment at the stationhouse to insure proper working order and proper maintenance.

Supervises the training, instruction and drill of fire department members on firematics, hazardous materials, departmental policies, procedures, operations and responsibilities.

Conducts fire code inspections in places of public assembly both when empty and when in use to insure observance of all fire regulations and capacity limitations.

Checks fire alarm systems, sprinklers and standpipes for proper maintenance and operation.

Conducts lectures to citizen groups and school children on fire prevention, fire protection and exiting procedures under fire conditions.

Administers first aid or emergency medical procedures to persons injured or ill at the scene of fires, accidents or other emergencies and transports to the hospital.

Directs and participates in checking and/or replacing drugs and equipment after an EMS alarm.

Directs and participates in the work of Firefighters (EMT) and emergency medical service staff at the scene of medical emergencies.

Prepares written incident reports of all emergency medical incidents.

Supervises medical billing procedures.

Through knowledge of the principles and practices of fire prevention and fire protection practices.

Through knowledge of first aid methods and emergency medical procedures.

Good knowledge of modern fire fighting methods.

Good knowledge of the geography and building conditions in the Town of Tully.

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.

Ability to recognize common fire hazards and corrective action needed.

Ability to supervise subordinate firefighters consistent with the requirements of fire fighting.

Ability to command subordinates in an emergency situation.

Ability to train subordinates in the techniques of modern fire fighting procedures and other areas of fire

department responsibility.

Ability to communicate effective both verbally and in writing.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:

 

Four (4) years of permanent competitive class status as a Firefighter (EMT).

A. Four (4) years of paid work experience, or its part time equivalent, as a Firefighter or Firefighter/EMT; or,

 

B. Eight (8) years of experience as a volunteer Firefighter which must have been as an active member in good

standing within a recognized fire department or fire corporation; or,

 

C. An equivalent combination of experience as defined by the limits of A and B.

 

Special Necessary Requirement at Time of Appointment

 

Possession of a current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic from the New York State Department of Health.

 

When required to operate motor vehicles, possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the type of vehicle to be operated.
