DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the daily operation of the Sheriff Department - Civil Division. Under the general supervision of the Deputy Sheriff Chief (Civil), an employee in this class oversees the day to day operation of the Civil Office, implementing the directives, policies and procedures promulgated by the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff Chief (Civil). Considerable leeway is exercised insuring the functioning of these operations. Work assignments are received orally or in writing from the Chief (Civil) Deputy or superiors, allowing for considerable leeway in there being implemented or performed. Work is reviewed through conference, observation of office operations and submission of written reports. Supervision is exercised over a number of sworn subordinates and clerical personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Insures the proper operation of the Civil Division office by: issuing orders on work activities to subordinate sworn and clerical personnel; prioritizing the operation of the office; insuring that monies collected are properly recorded and dispersed to appropriate accounts; insuring employee time records are complete and accurate; insuring that employees are properly evaluated; acts as office manager.
Advises Deputy Sheriff Chief (Civil) on areas of the office requiring change, assist in developing revisions to current policies and procedures.
Functions in the absence of the Deputy Sheriff Chief (Civil).
Maintains employee records relating to time bank, and evaluations of personnel performance.
Periodically reviews and evaluates field operations to ensure compliance with the Divisions policies, procedures and the law.
Operates a department motor vehicle and communicates using mobile and portable radios and computers.
May perform all duties of subordinate officers.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the New York State Civil Practice Law and Rules.
Good knowledge of current procedures and practices used in enforcement of Civil Process and Code of Ethics.
Good knowledge of principles and practices of administration, organization, effective management and work processing.
Skill and proficiency in the use of departmental issued firearms.
Ability to use a computer.
Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to establish and maintain a harmonious and effective working relationship with governmental agencies, officials and the general public.
Ability to prepare, understand and interpret written material.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Deputy Sheriff Sergeant (Civil).
