DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for initiating, organizing, and directing safe school bus driving and school transportation safety training programs in compliance with New York State laws. Work includes setting up safety programs; training programs; examining school bus drivers; and checking the safety of bus routes and pickup locations. Work is performed under general supervision of the School Transportation Director with leeway allowed for exercising independent judgement. Supervision is exercised over one (1) or more School Transportation Safety Instructors. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Instructs and trains potential school bus drivers in compliance with New York State laws.

Evaluates drivers annually in compliance with Article 19A of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles,

including oral, written and performance tests.

Checks bus routes and pickup locations for safety and makes recommendations to the Director of safety hazards and possible solutions.

Investigates reports from the public of safety hazards or problems in regard to school busing of children, and makes appropriate reports and recommendations to correct situation.

Assists drivers involved in accidents by providing instruction to improve driving skills and insure safe driving habits.

Acts as a liaison between school bus drivers and the school transportation office in communicating ideas and needs of the drivers and the school policies for safe and efficient transportation of school children.

May transport children to and from school as a relief school bus operator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:

Two (2) years of permanent, competitive class status in the title of School Bus Dispatcher.

 

Open-competitive:

Three (3) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in traffic safety and accident prevention or in driver education or training.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a valid CDL class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement motor vehicle license issued by the State of New York at time of appointment; and,

Possession of certificate as a Certified State Examiner for school bus drivers at time of appointment.
