DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for maintaining traffic, direction and pedestrian safety. The employee is responsible for conducting traffic at an assigned post during hours when pedestrians are entering or leaving schools and other activities via congested and busy streets. The work requires exercising independent judgment and considerable vigilance with only occasional direction from a supervisor. Street Crossing Guard positions are classified as non‑competitive positions when filled on a part‑time or seasonal basis. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Assists and aids children and pedestrians when crossing streets. Directs traffic at intersections and crosswalks. Slows down or stops vehicular traffic as needed. Instructs the younger children in the proper procedures and precautions necessary in crossing a street safely.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Working knowledge of the proper techniques of assisting in street crossing and traffic control. Working knowledge of first aid methods. Ability to be firm yet courteous with the public. Ability to get along well with children. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
