DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the administration and operation of the Sheriff Department Police Division. An employee in this class exercises control for the planning, organizing, coordinating, motivating and controlling of law enforcement personnel engaged in area patrol, criminal investigations and juvenile delinquency. This is an administrative function which receives assignments through conference with the Sheriff or Undersheriff. Assignments, other than the effective and efficient operation of the Division, are based upon enforcement and/or directional changes wished to be pursued by the Sheriff. The day to day operational activity of the Division remains consistent with enforcement of all Federal, State, Local Laws, Rules and Regulations promulgated for the protection of citizens. Review is undertaken through conference, submission of written reports and complaints received on the Divisions operation. Considerable latitude for independent judgement is exercised by the incumbent in carrying out daily operations, technical details of the work and in solving law enforcement problems. Indirect supervision is exercised over the entire Division and general supervision is maintained over a number of subordinate second level supervisors and the Deputy Sheriff Assistant Chief (Police). Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans, organizes, coordinates, motivates and controls supervisory personnel methods and practices relating to law enforcement activities and problems.
Directs special investigations and reports progress and findings to Sheriff or Undersheriff.
Reports to the Sheriff or Undersheriff on a continuing basis all matters which affect the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement.
May serve as Duty Chief for the entire Sheriff's Department.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of modern law enforcement methods and practices and the use of good judgement in solving law enforcement problems.
Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of administration, organization, effective management, Ethics Code and work processing.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to use a computer.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate law enforcement methods and practices.
Ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to prepare, understand and interpret written material.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
As an Exempt class Civil Service appointment, the Sheriff may make a personal appointment to the position. Such appointee serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.
