FIRST DEPUTY CHIEF OF POLICE
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Has administrative charge of the operational functions of the department; performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direction, plans and organizes the work of all operational divisions in the department. Delegates responsibility for supervisory command of divisions to subordinates. Acts as Chief of Police in the latter's absence.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Exercises administrative control over various bureaus.
Plans the distribution of personnel.
Conducts investigations of procedures and inaugurates improved revisions.
Holds staff conferences.
Plans and organizes operational functions to take care of unusual events such as disasters, riots, conflagrations, etc.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of police work.
Comprehensive knowledge of governing laws and ordinances.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of police administration.
Ability to command subordinate officers effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other law enforcement agencies, community organizations and the general public.
Ability to prepare concise, complex reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
One year permanent status as a Police Lieutenant.
