DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for the charge of the operations of a platoon or special unit as assigned. Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs important law enforcement functions in accordance with established procedures and policies of the Police Department. Typical duties include assigning officers to their post, supervising and evaluating their work performance and instructing them in the new and approved police methods and procedures. Assignments are received from an administrative superior and reviewed through conferences and submission of reports. Employees in this class may be assigned to supervise criminal investigation cork and are expected to perform technical and administrative duties. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Directs the activities of patrol forces, criminal investigators or special units.

Assigns tasks to subordinates and reviews operations.

Gives instructions to subordinate officers as to methods of improving law enforcement activity‑

Directs raids and makes arrests.

Directs police activities at riots, serious crimes, fires or unusual disorders.

Investigates crimes where unusual and/or difficult law enforcement problems are likely to occur.

Dispenses information to staff and citizens regarding departmental policies and methods.

Performs other related duties or special assignments as assigned by the Chief or Deputy Chief of Police.

 

When Assigned to a Municipality:

May be assigned as Assistant to the Police Chief, acting as second in command of the Department and assuming the duties of the Chief if necessary.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of lam enforcement.

Thorough knowledge of laws and ordinances governing local. Police work.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods employed in investigation work.

Ability to obtain information through interview, interrogation and observation, and to prepare and submit comprehensive activity and case reports.

Ability to lead and direct subordinate officers.

Ability to deal courteously but firmly w1th the public.

Ability to make oral and written reports.

Ability in the use and care of firearms.

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Promotion:

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Police Sergeant.

 

Open-Competitive:

Five (5) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, as a permanent competitive class Police Officer, two (2) years of which must have been in the rank of Police Sergeant or above or in an equivalent supervisory title.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

In accordance with Section 58.1.b of Civil Service Law "... no person shall be eligible for appointment nor shall he or she be appointed to any rank above the rank of Police Officer unless he or she has been appointed a Police Officer from an eligible list established according to merit and fitness as provided by section six of article five of the Constitution of the State of New York or has previously served as a member of the New York State Police."
