DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing manual semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of recreation areas, athletic fields, playgrounds and related equipment and when assigned to the Town of Skaneateles the maintenance of a community center, swimming pool and ice rink. Under the general supervision of a Director of Recreation or Recreation Facilities Supervisor, an employee in this class performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual tasks in a number of trade areas, including carpentry, plumbing and mechanical work. The duties can be learned on-the-job and require a good degree of mechanical aptitude rather than recreational maintenance experience. Assignments are usually received verbally, by work order, or arise in daily maintenance activities. Supervision may be exercised over a number of unskilled laborers.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Performs and may supervise routine groundskeeping duties at parks and playgrounds, such as: mowing grass using riding and power mowers; use of hand tools to remove weeds, brush and grass cuttings; trim trees and bushes; spread fertilizers and spray insecticides; build and replace grass areas using a small tractor with attachments and a light truck to drag areas, haul and spread fill and top soil with broadcast seed; pick up and remove trash and debris.

Drags, rakes, levels and lines athletic fields using a tractor with attachments and hand tools; lines basketball and tennis courts according to specific instructions.

Uses a variety of hand tools to build and repair picnic tables, playground equipment, shelters and other park equipment.

Maintains swimming pools by removing debris, replacing tiles, cleaning or replacing filters, performing routine maintenance of pumps and motors.

Builds, floods, drains and removes snow from small skating rinks.

Paints tables and fences; may paint building interiors and exteriors; replaces broken windows.

Performs routine maintenance and minor repair of power mowers, riding mower or small tractor.

Maintains records which relate to maintenance or repair work performed.

May replace electrical outlets and fixtures and do simple electrical wiring.

 

When employed in the Town of Skaneateles:

 

Performs regular preventative maintenance of pools including heating and filter systems; clean and services filter; may back wash filters, may monitor automatic chlorinating equipment by refilling chlorine and recording chlorine use.

May keep simple logs of pool temperature, chemical readings.

Performs regular preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment within the Community Center.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in a pool, ice rink and park maintenance work.

Working knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and practices used in ground maintenance work.

Working knowledge of the tools, materials and methods used in performance of semi-skilled work in variety of trades.

Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools and light motor equipment

Ability to understand and follow directions.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to perform light and heavy manual tasks.

Ability to deal tactfully with the public.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Two (2) years of full time work experience, or its part time equivalent, in maintenance and repair tasks as a helper to a journey level employee in at least one (1) of the major trades.
