DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for instructing and leading in a special area of activity such as arts and crafts, music, drama, dance or sports for a municipal recreation program. An employee in this class teaches or conducts some specialty with considerable latitude as to method. An employee in this class teaches and develops skill in specific activities. The position may involve the actual conduct of the activity or the organization and initiation of activity groups and the instruction of recreation leaders. General direction and supervision are received from a Director of Recreation or a Recreation Supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over Recreation Leaders or Aides. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Plans and conducts programs in arts and crafts, music, drama, dance, aquatics, nature study, social recreation,

sports and games, or some other special activity skill.

Depending on area of assignment, may do one or more of the following:

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS ,ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the specialty skill.

Good knowledge of the methods and practices of group organization and instruction used in the specialty activity.

Ability to develop a good working relationship with groups and individuals.

Ability to stimulate and maintain interest of the participants in the activity.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the specialty activity.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. *One (1) year of experience in the conduct of the special area of activity; or,

 

  1. Possession of a current license or certificate in the special activity.

 

NOTE: *Must have a minimum of 52 hours in the conduct of the activity.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

When assigned to teach swimming:

Possession of the American National Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate or equivalent certificate from the YMCA or other certifying agency.
