DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision of a recreation leader or other staff member, an employee in this class performs routine, beginning level tasks in recreation work. A Recreation Aide generally does not plan, develop or evaluate recreation activities, but is the first line staff member in initiating users’ participation in these activities. A Recreation Aide may serve as a Skating Rink Guard maintaining safety and order. Employees in this class generally do not exercise supervision of others. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in the conduct of a program at a recreation center, a gymnasium, a playground or a play field.
Assists in the conduct of socials, dances, tournaments, special events, storytelling sessions, dramatics, and parties.
Supervises the conduct of recreation activities in gymnasiums, on play fields, or playgrounds to maintain safety and order and enforce rules and regulations.
Initiates children's participation in games, sports, arts and crafts, dancing, singing, dramatics, and so on.
May officiate games or athletic contests, under supervision of a referee or umpire.
May chaperone trips and other group activities.
May distribute and collect jump ropes, play balls, table games, coloring books, and other recreation equipment.
May operate a movie projector.
May make up simple time schedule for sports or other recreation activities.
May make simple lists of participation figures, activities, equipment, etc.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge and familiarity with several types of sports and games.
Ability to comprehend, remember, and follow instructions.
