DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This is work of ordinary difficulty involving the supervision and care of children during the lunch hour within the Syracuse City School District. Because there are definite limits on the type and complexity of assignments, the class of School Recreation Aide differs in that respect from Teacher Assistant, which usually involves duties of greater difficulty generally requiring specific skills or abilities. Typical tasks involve the implementation of low organized, recreational activities planned by supervisors, Principals, Vice Principals or other designated administrator.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises students during lunch period in lunchroom, in gymnasiums, and on play fields during short recreation periods to maintain safety and order.
Assist elementary children with opening milk or juice containers, condiment and silverware packets, and other basic meal time needs.
Initiates student’s participation in table games; gymnasium activities such as basketball or kickball; and, field games, such as softball. (Activities assigned by individual location and are scheduled depending on number of student’s to staff ratio).
Issues, collects, and organizes jump ropes, play balls, and table games.
May operate VCR/DVD.
Wipes off lunch tables between lunch periods.
May escort ill or injured students to the nurse’s office.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Ability to be firm, yet courteous, with students when supervising their meal time and/or play time.
Ability to relate well with children in stimulating their interest in low-organized recreational activities.
Ability to conduct low organized, recreational activities for children.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no minimum qualifications for this position.
