DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for providing limited social work services to the clients, and their families, at the Onondaga County Hillbrook Detention Home facility. Hillbrook Detention Home is a secure, detention facility for juveniles. Under direct supervision, an employee in this class provides limited social work services to families with social and emotional problems and assists the clients and their families with specific problems relating to detention. The employee also meets with other staff members of the facility and/or staff of outside agencies connected with the clients to obtain assistance and guidance for clients. Supervision of subordinate employees is not usually performed by employees in this class. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Interviews residents and consults with their families and other agencies in making social and developmental assessments.

Provides limited social work services to help residents and their families to adjust to detention.

Provides information to residents, families, and other persons involved with residents as to current expectations, practices, laws, regulations and procedures of the Juvenile Justice System.

Collects and maintains appropriate data from various sources such as professional staff and client's families to establish an overall approach to solution of residents social problems.

Maintains information on community resources which can be utilized by the residents.

May work with private, voluntary and other public agencies to identify the availability of related community services.

Records social information to develop case histories.

Acts as liaison for resident children and all related external influences.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the practices and procedures of social work and of the social factors affecting adolescent and delinquent children.

Ability to organize work effectively.

Ability to interpret federal, state and local laws affecting Juvenile detention and other Juvenile care programs.

Ability to prepare written and verbal reports.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

A)  Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of paraprofessional or professional level work experience, or its part-time equivalent, working with youth within a counseling or treatment based setting.
