DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the general supervision from the Executive Director, an employee in this
position directs and coordinates a county-wide program established for the purpose of
providing older (low income) Onondaga County residents, low cost, nutritionally sound
meals as a means of introduction to social and rehabilitative programs. Home
delivered meals are also provided to those homebound older people who are unable to
shop for or prepare their meals. Work is performed in accordance with policies
outlined by the Metropolitan Commission on Aging, and the New York State Office for
Aging under the direct supervision of the Metropolitan Commission. Wide latitude is
provided within general policies, for the exercise of independent judgement in
directing and coordinating all aspects of the program. Supervision is exercised over
MCOA staff when working on the program and the staff of all subcontracting agencies
through the directors of the nutrition program staffs of these agencies. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Promotes better health among the older segment of the population through improved nutrition; coordinates supportive social programs to reduce the isolation of old age;
Supervises sub-contracting agency personnel on the overall aspects of meal planning, food ordering and food preparation to ensure that nutritionally adequate meals are hygienically prepared at the lowest possible cost;
Supervises and coordinates a Project Council of nutrition program consumers and
others with expertise in the area;
Oversees the performance of the sub-contracting agencies to ensure conformance with
nutritional standards and applicable County, State and Federal rules and regulations;
Organizes and supervises an ongoing program of public relations to ensure the widest possible dissemination to consumers of information about the services available in the Nutrition Program;
Supervises the nutrition assessments required for the homebound meal program.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of nutrition and their application to public health.
Good knowledge of County, State and Federal rules and regulations relative to senior citizens nutrition program.
Ability to organize and coordinate all financial and program data needed for evaluation. Ability to direct and coordinate training programs.
Ability to gain the confidence of fellow workers and the public.
Ability to work effectively with committees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion
Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Nutrition Services Coordinator.
Open Competitive
A. Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Baccalaureate
Degree in Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics, Institutional Administration, or a
related field and a minimum of four (4) years experience, or its part time
equivalent, in administration of a food service program or quantity food service
in a human services agency or institutional setting (creditable experience shall have been obtained only
by employment in a hospital, senior citizens center, school lunch program, day
care center, or extended care facility); or,
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2)
year college or university with an Associate's Degree in food service or nutritional
technology and six (6) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in
administration of a nutrition program or quantity food service in a human services agency or institutional
setting (creditable experience shall have been obtained only by employment in a hospital, senior citizens
center, school lunch program, day care center, or extended care facility); or,
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (A) or (B)
above.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
Possession of a Registered Dietician License issued by the American Dietetic
Association at the time of appointment.
