The work involves responsibility for assisting participants in the Women, Infants and Children program of the Onondaga County Health Department. An employee in this class is responsible for direct contact with participants concerning WIC policies, as well as filling out appropriate forms and referring participants to WIC Nutritionists. Direct supervision is received from an administrative superior. Supervision is not a responsibility of this position. Does related work as required.
Collects and enters financial, residential and categorical WIC eligibility information into WIC Management Information System (NYWIC).
Reviews Rights and Responsibilities with participants.
Provides referrals to health and social service agencies, and documents in participant’s records.
Assigns clinic appointments for program participants.
Answers inquiries about program within given guidelines.
Performs hematological testing and anthropometric measurements on WIC participants.
Acts as a greeter in clinic area to ensure participant receives appropriate paperwork needed.
Performs general reception duties such as, but not limited to, answering phones, filing and scanning.
Participates in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned.
Utilizes appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, lifestyles and physical abilities.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of WIC policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of record keeping, filing and clerical techniques.
Ability to determine WIC eligibility.
Ability to understand and interpret written material.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with health professionals, program participants and community agencies.
Ability to communicate effectively with the public.

Candidates must be high school graduates or holders of a high school equivalency diploma issued by an education department of any of the states of the United States or holders of a comparable diploma issued by any territory, commonwealth, or possession of the United States or by the Canal Zone or holders of a report from the United States Armed Forces certifying successful completion of the tests related to general education development, high school level and have one (1) year of experience, or its part-time equivalent, providing customer service that included data entry.
