DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The Director of Operations (Parks) is responsible for the daily operations of each of the parks within Onondaga County’s Parks Department. The incumbent will maintain the Park’s high standards of customer service, safety and physical upkeep through the supervision and direction of the Park Superintendents. Reporting to the Commissioner of the Parks Department, the Director will coordinate maintenance and construction projects within the Parks Department as well as develop and enforce operating policies and procedures.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Responsible for assuring the maintenance and upkeep of all facilities and grounds within Onondaga County Parks Department.

Plans, schedules and prioritizes ongoing maintenance as well as special projects.

Performs staff and site evaluations to assure projects are adhering to schedule and that County Parks Standards for safety and facilities appearance are being met.

Directly supervises the Park Superintendents.

Communicate with other departments regarding maintenance and asset management issues.

Addresses public concerns related to the park’s grounds and facilities condition and usage.

Thorough knowledge of supervisory techniques.

Thorough knowledge of Onondaga County Parks and Park Operations.

Good knowledge of park policies, rules and regulations.

Good knowledge of laws, policies and regulations relating to safety protocols for public facilities and public employees.

Ability to develop, communicate and enforce policies, procedures and directives.

Ability to set priorities for park operations and maintenance.

Ability to plan, schedule, assign and supervise the work of subordinate employees.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.

Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotional

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Park Superintendent II.

 

Open Competitive

Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelors Degree and four (4) years of management-level work experience, or its part-time equivalent, three (3) years of which must have included supervision or oversight of two or more discrete operational functions or departments within an organization.
