The work involves responsibility for the administration of the medical examiner's office in the capacity of chief pathologist for Onondaga County. Under the general direction of the Commissioner of Health, the work is performed in accordance with municipal law, codes and statutes in addition to policies and procedures established by governing authorities with wide leeway for the exercise of independent judgment regarding technical details of the work. General supervision is exercised over a number of technical, professional, paraprofessional, clerical and labor class employees in the medical examiner's office. Does related work as required.
In the capacity of chief pathologist, performs autopsies with all attending professionally acceptable examinations, both internal and external, including the evaluation and interpretation of radiographs, documentation of findings with a written record, diagrams, charts and photographs to establish the cause, manner and mechanism of death in a fashion satisfactory for statistical and legal purposes.
Makes diagnostic determinations based on laboratory reports, patient histories and other data and suggests a course of therapy.
Acts as a consultant to physicians, dentists and medical staffs of various local hospitals in the field of anatomic and clinical pathology.
Supervises the preparation of the medical examiner's office budgets, the hiring of personnel, purchase of equipment, etc.
Provides in service training to Medical Examiner employees.
Acts as a source of public health information and education in the community.
Attends conferences and meetings and serves on medical, civic or special committees as requested.
Prepares correspondence and reports as required.
Participates in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, literature, methods, techniques and current developments in the field of pathology.
Ability to perform advanced research in the field.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of a large number of technical, professional, paraprofessional, clerical and labor class employees.
Ability to write complex analytic and technical reports.
Initiative and resourcefulness in the solution of complex technical and scientific problems.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a degree of Doctor of Medicine and five (5) years of experience, or its part time equivalent, in a Medical Examiner's or similar office.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State.
Board certification by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and forensic pathology.
