DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing specialized clerical work involving death investigations as well as performing general office work. Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class performs case file maintenance as well as custodial maintenance in the morgue and autopsy facility. Due to the nature of the position, employees in this class may be required to work evenings. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Performs general office work including receiving phone calls of cases as reported and relaying information received to the medical examiner.

Maintains order and supplies and assists in inventory control.

Assists in identification of the dead by obtaining information from hospitals and doctors or by properly showing the decedent to persons identifying the body.

Maintains absolute confidentiality of all information pertaining to case material at the Medical Examiner's Office.

Documents and assists in maintaining custody of drugs, medications and valuables associated with specific case investigations.

May assist in releasing bodies to funeral directors.

Participates in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned.

Ability and physical strength to lift and move heavy bodies under difficult circumstances.

Ability to meet and talk with relatives and friends of deceased persons under trying circumstances.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

There are no minimum qualifications for this position.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT:

 

A. When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid Non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
