DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing tasks involved in the process of conducting a program of diversified, recreational and social leisure time activities with patients or residents in a residential health care facility or long term home health care program. Responsibility may also include routine housekeeping and helper tasks related to the activities program. The work is performed under direct supervision of a Leisure Time Activities Director. Incumbents receive on-the-job training in routine leisure time activities program duties. Supervision may be required over the work of subordinates. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Assists patients and residents in craft projects and other leisure time activities.

Prepares equipment, supplies and facilities for special entertainment and individual or group activities.

Organizes and participates in games and other forms of leisure time activities.

Aids with arrangements for movies, picnics, theme days and other events.

Assists with development of the leisure time activities program schedules by planning a variety of cultural, social, and crafts activities.

Attends meetings and completes written patient/resident evaluations relating to leisure time activities.

Assesses patients and residents expressed interests and responses to leisure time activities.

Aids in inventory, cleaning and storage of activities supplies and equipment.

Maintains simple records and reports.

Aids in the preparation and serving of refreshments during activities.

May supervise volunteers, Hospital Aides, and field students.

Lifts and helps move patients.

Attends and participates in the facilities in-service training programs.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Working knowledge of basic arts, crafts, games, sports, hobbies and other appropriate leisure time activities used in a residential health care facility or long term home health care program.

Ability to stimulate and maintain participation and interest in the leisure time activities program.

Ability to formulate, organize, and promote recreation activities.

Ability to understand the problems and attitudes of ill, aged and handicapped persons and the importance of their participation in a leisure time activities program.

Ability to establish working rapport with public agencies and groups.

Ability to maintain simple records and reports.

Ability to communicate effectively with groups and individuals.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

A. Two (2) years of full time work experience, or its part time equivalent, conducting organized recreation activities, such as games, sports, or arts and crafts; or,

B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associates Degree in recreation or human services; or,

C. Graduation from an approved training program for Occupational Therapy Assistant; or,

D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A, B, and C above.
