DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

This is an administrative position responsible for overseeing and administering a comprehensive health services program in a large school district. The employee is responsible for the daily program delivery and implementing medical services and directives as prescribed by the schools' medical director. The employee is given considerable latitude in implementing programs to maintain wellness among the student population. A major part of the job involves supervising the various school health offices insuring coverage and program delivery. The work is received by the Medical Director through conference and reports on office activity. Supervision is exercised over a number of nurses, therapists and aides. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supervises all members of the Health Services Division.

Assists the Medical Director in setting policies, guidelines and directions for the medical staff of a large school district.

Investigates and defines many of the problems in the School Health Program for the Medical Director with primary emphasis in the area of school nursing.

Represents and/or acts on behalf of the Medical Director as a member of various committees in the School District and its community.

Prepares and carries out the agenda for scheduled monthly departmental staff meetings with the Medical Director.

Interviews perspective applicants to the Health Services Department and make recommendations to the Medical Director.

Participates in the organization, scheduling, staffing and operating various clinics, immunizations and other health related programs.

Assumes responsibility for emergency coverage for nursing services.

Participates in organizing and implementing professional nursing in service training programs.

Arranges for and conducts orientation for Health Service employees.

Assists in the preparation of a variety of reports and budget requests.

Evaluates nursing staff and other Health Service employees.

Assists the Medical Director with the follow up of district employees who are ill or disabled.

Plans, implements and evaluates programs with School of Nursing for student training.

Requisitions supplies and maintains inventory of paperwork associated with the school health service.

Prepares and updates communications to staff, parents and community on health information or related issues.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical practices.

Good knowledge of materia-medica, dietetics, sanitation and personal hygiene.

Good knowledge of modern principles, practices, and techniques in nursing administration.

Skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of school nurses and other staff within the Health Services Unit.

Ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions.

Ability to keep records and make reports.

Ability to establish and maintain constructive working relationships with students, parents, school staff and physicians.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to perform duties in accordance with the ANA Code of Professional Nurses.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree in nursing and two (2) years of nursing experience, one (1) year of which must have involved health services within a school system.

 

Special Necessary Requirement

Possession of a current license to practice as a registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
