DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for the medical oversight and administrative direction of a division or program in the Department of Health. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Provides medical direction to all Onondaga County Health Department medical-related health programs, including Community Health, Disease Control, Environmental Health, Health Families, Public Health Preparedness and Employee Health.

Provides medical and/or clinical consultation to all medical-related health programs, including direct patient care, prescriptions, laboratory orders, standing orders and other orders as needed for the clinical teams.

Provides support for the Medical Directors of the TB Control Program and STD Center and serve as liaison between the Commissioner and Medical Directors.

Provides administrative and medical direction to a division or program of the Department of Health.

Acts as liaison between Onondaga County Health Department medical programs and related medical programs in the community.

Acts as liaison between the Onondaga County Health Department and the New York State Health Department and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (as needed)concerning medical matters, regulations and programmatic direction.

Acts as a public health consultant to local medical doctors and other organizations.

Provides medical consultation for professional Onondaga County Health Department staff.

Prepares, arranges or conducts in-service training programs for staff.

Compiles periodic medical reports and arranges for the collection of appropriate medical data and refers to appropriate collation source.

Supports Onondaga County Health Department Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement and Performance Management programs.

Provides oversight of Onondaga County Health Department Infection Control, Pharmacy and Safety Committees.

Supervises and conducts annual review of all Onondaga County Health Department medical-related policies and procedures, including program-specific policies and procedures.

Provides on-call service support to the Onondaga County Health Department during non-business hours.

Provides periodic evaluation of the clinical skills of Onondaga County Health Department Nurse Practitioner staff.

Reviews Onondaga County Health Department preparedness response plans and consults on issues and activities, including current and emerging public health threats.

Utilizes appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations lifestyles and physical abilities.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Proficiency with public health, epidemiology and infectious diseases.

Ability to direct, advise and support medical and clinical staff.

Ability to collaborate and work well with others.

Ability to manage time efficiently.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Possession of a M.D. Degree from a medical school recognized by the New York State Education Department or equivalent professional degree recognized by the New York State Education Department.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State.
