The work involves responsibility for performing licensed practical nursing duties as required in direct patient care in accordance with a detailed patient care plan. An employee in this class functions as an integral part of the nursing team. Activities are restricted to performing only those duties for which preparation and training have been given. Supervision is usually received from a Registered Nurse. Depending on assignment, the Licensed Practical Nurse may supervise Hospital Aides. Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet field work requirements made in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. Does related work as required.
Performs nursing procedures including catheterizations, bladder and colostomy treatment, irrigations, administers oxygen, assists physician with treatments, examinations and tests, etc.
Administers medication as prescribed by the physician.
Observes and reports significant signs and symptoms to the appropriate staff.
Writes up daily reports, charts nursing notes, and communicates important
information to staff.
Assists with the rehabilitation of patients according to the patient care plan.
Participates in the development, revision and implementation of policies
designed to insure safety and comfort of patients and personnel.
Provides for physical, emotional and spiritual comfort and the environmental safety of patients.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE ONONDAGA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT:
Participates in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned
Working knowledge of nursing techniques and their relation to medical and surgical procedures.
Working knowledge of sanitation and hygiene.
Ability to recognize signs and symptoms indicative of changes in the general physical and mental condition of the patient.
Ability to carry out therapeutic treatments prescribed.
Ability to understand and carry out detailed verbal and written instructions.
Ability to encourage patients to help within their own capabilities in
performing activities of daily living.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Completion of a course of study approved by the New York State Education Department as qualifying for Licensed Practical Nurse.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
Possession of a New York State Practical Nurse's license within one (1) year of appointment.
When Assigned To Onondaga County Health Department
Possession of a New York State Practical Nurse's license at time of appointment.
