DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing professional architectural work in the preparation and review of plans for building sites, landscape and related projects. An employee in this class is responsible for the application of professional architectural skills and knowledge to difficult building design, site plans, landscape design, renovations and related projects. This classification differs from that of Architect I in the degree of difficulty of assignment, final authority for approval and area and span of supervision. Considerable independent judgment is exercised in this position. Assignments are received from an administrative superior through conference and reviewed by submission of reports. Supervision may be exercised over professional, technical and clerical staff. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supervises and participates in the preparation of architectural plans.

Reviews plans submitted by engineers and architects for conformance to zoning and subdivision regulations.

Prepares or oversees the preparation of cost estimates and contract documents.

Supervises and participates in the preparation of building plans, landscape design and site design work as required.

Reviews plans and designs from consulting architects for conformance to project requirements.

Supervises and participates in the field inspection of buildings and sites under review by the division and compiles analytical data on site conditions.

Meets with administrative personnel to explain designs and recommend approval or disapproval of plans.

Executes and checks architectural drawings, plans, specifications, and associated charts and tables.

Supervises the work of professional, technical and clerical staff relative to drafting, computation and presentation of recommendations.

Produces AutoCAD drawings as part of design documents.

May perform onsite inspections during construction to ensure that the project is progressing as planned, and that all safety measures are being followed.

May certify completion of various construction phases.

May recommend payment dates and amounts due contractors.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of architecture.

Thorough knowledge of the planning, design and construction of buildings and/or landscape architecture projects.

Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to the construction and renovation of buildings and site design.

Good knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of architecture.

Good knowledge of AutoCAD including concept of paper space/model space.

Ability to analyze contracts, designs, cost estimates and plans

Ability to create new or edit existing AutoCAD drawings to conform to office standards.

Ability to prepare architectural drawings and specifications.

Ability to make comprehensive recommendations on architectural problems.

Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to establish and maintain a harmonious working relationship with governmental officials, private contractors and the general public.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

PROMOTION:

Three (3) years of permanent, competitive class status in the title of Architect I.

 

OPEN COMPETITIVE:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a bachelor’s degree or higher in architecture and four (4) years of professional work experience, or its part time equivalent, as an Architect; or,

  2. Eight (8) years of professional work experience, or its part time equivalent, as an Architect.

 

NOTE: Examples of qualifying architectural work experience include creating architectural drawings, preparing project cost and time estimations, interpreting blueprints, or inspecting projects for compliance.
