DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing elementary technical work in assisting on engineering projects in the field or office in Onondaga County Government departments. Under supervision, an employee in this class acts as an assistant in a survey party or comparable level of work in the field or office. Specific work assignments received are usually accompanied by detailed written or oral instructions. Employees have more responsibility for work methods and greater opportunity to use independent judgment and engineering skill as experience is gained. Work is distinguished from that of Engineering Aide I by operation of the more complex engineering instruments and by assumption of a higher degree of sub-professional engineering responsibility. This employee may act as party chief on minor engineering surveys. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate Engineering Aides. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Acts as an assistant on a survey crew by operating engineers level, theodolite, and an electronic total station data collector to establish line and grade; secures or establishes elevations.

On engineering surveys, operates a theodolite and/or electronic total station to locate established lines, points and angles, and establishes the relationship of surface features with each other by angles, elevations and distances; may act as party chief on minor engineering surveys.

Reduces field notes, prepares field notes, plots cross sections from field notes; makes the less difficult computations.

Performs a variety of sub-professional engineering tasks in engineering office including preliminary computer processing of field data.

Acts as construction inspector on construction projects.

Depending on assignment, may verify material quantities used during construction, as certify payments to contractors for work done.

May prepare plans for construction projects and “as built” plans using CAD.
