DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing elementary work in assisting on engineering projects in the

field or office in Onondaga County Government departments. An employee in this class uses elementary engineering techniques and equipment in performing routine sub-professional work. Progressively more difficult tasks are assigned to an employee as experience is gained. Work is performed under direct supervision with little independent judgment or action required, and assignments are accompanied by specific instructions until routines are thoroughly mastered. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Serves as a member of a survey crew; assists the crew by using automatic levels, theodolites and standard tools of the trade; clears brush, drives stakes, holds chain or rod, takes simple notes, makes minor sketches; cleans and cares for tools and equipment.

Assists in the inspection of work on construction projects; assists in making material and soil compaction tests.

Performs general engineering office work; plots cross sections, traces maps, colors prints, makes tracings of engineering drawings, and may perform computer aided drafting (CAD) work.

Investigates record plans and collects field data, measurements and pictures of culverts, drainage and streams, road conditions, and traffic signs.

Operates standard engineering office appliances such as computers, calculators, document scanning, duplicating and plotting machines.

Performs associated clerical duties as required.

May perform flagman duties.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of elementary mathematics and physics.

Working knowledge of simple engineering instruments, equipment and practices.

Ability to utilize Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) to prepare drawings and sketches and estimate quantities.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to walk in an outdoor environment with uneven surfaces.

Willingness to work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Successful completion of 15 semester credit hours in Algebra, Geometry and or Trigonometry in a technical curriculum such as Engineering, Surveying or Architecture.

 

  1. 6 months of paraprofessional level work experience in civil engineering or land surveying.

 

  1. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) or (B) above.
