DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for performing routine technical drafting work utilizing standard drafting techniques in the preparation of maps and drawings. An employee in this class uses drafting, detailing, tracing and computer aided drafting techniques to prepare drawings and maps. Work may involve a variety of office work such as care of equipment, cataloging and dispensing maps and drawings and reproducing materials on office printing machines. General supervision is received from a higher level drafting technician or an administrative superior. Supervision is not typically a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Draws and revises maps, plotting existing and proposed subdivisions, property lines, streets, water systems, sewers, parking facilities and police and fire stations and showing current land use patterns.
Prepares mountings, overlays and layouts in connection with planning, engineering and architectural studies.
Prepares drawings, sketches and maps of proposed engineering, traffic control and community development projects using pencil, ink, computer aided drafting (CAD) and other media for public presentation and publication.
Cares for and dispenses tools and materials; catalogs and dispenses maps; may make prints using standard drafting printing machines and plotters.
Creates and updates tables, charts, graphs and data bases using pencil, ink or computer; maintains related files as required.
May compute acreage of land parcels, mathematically or by use of measuring devices.
May check and compare early records to correctly identify the parcels or portions thereof intended to transfer title.
May confirm identity of property described on early tax rolls and other records as assessed prior to the adoption of tax maps.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the principles, methods and instruments of mechanical drawing.
Skill in the use of mechanical drawing materials, instruments and computer aided drafting hardware and software.
Skill in lettering, tracing and detailing.
Ability to correctly identify and transfer to maps, property lines, streets, water systems, etc. as described in legal documents or reduced field notes, etc.
Ability to make simple computations involving trigonometry, geometry and algebra.
Ability to read blueprints or survey maps.
Ability to prepare routine technical maps and drawings.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Successful completion of a course in mechanical drawing or drafting from a school recognized by the New York State Department of Education; or,
B. Six (6) months of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in drafting.
