DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for planning, coordinating and overseeing the operations of the Center for Multimedia Technology and the Academic Computer Center at Onondaga Community College. Under the supervision of the Dean of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, an employee in this class develops and controls the departments budget, supervises subordinate staff members, assists and supports the members of the faculty as a technical advisor in either the application of multimedia and computer technology as it relates to developing instructional material for their classes and/or recommending the purchase of equipment. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Performs, plans and evaluates functions for the Center for Multimedia Technology and the Academic Computer Center;

Develops and controls department budget;

Assists and supports members of the faculty as technical advisor;

Supervises subordinate staff;

Oversees the creation of computer graphics and text, photographic projects relative to instructional and other institutional needs;

Supervises the repair; maintenance and acquisition of multimedia and computer equipment;

Selects, installs upgrades and maintains computer software library in the Academic Computer Center;

Develops and supervises record keeping system needed in the accounting of the department's operational activities;

Supervise subordinate staff in the creation of computer graphics and text, record the data and display the production as requested by the user;

Supervise subordinate staff in the integration of video cameras, digitizers and graphics in the creation of professional looking video presentations;

Supervise and monitor the Dedicated Computer Classroom;

Supervise subordinate staff in the collection and sorting of images, special effects, sounds and narrations into modules to facilitate inclusion into productions.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the operation and uses of a variety of sophisticated audio and visual media production equipment and technology;

Good knowledge of the methods and techniques of design and development of video, audio and multi-image sound/slide programs;

Skill in the operation of cameras, lighting systems, videotape electronic editors and duplicators, video calibration equipment and video processors and related equipment;

Skill in the operation of sophisticated slide duplication equipment to create multi-image, special effect and text slides;

Skill in the operation of multi-channel stereo mixing equipment, reel to reel audio tape decks, audio cassette tape decks, and multi-bay tape duplicators;

Skill in the recording and mixing of sound effects including narratives to

create sound tracts;

Ability to direct and supervise the work of subordinates;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status is the title of Audio-Visual Specialist or Media Development Specialist.

 

Open Competitive

A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Baccalaureate degree in audio-visual technology, communications technology, educational communications, broadcast or television production or technology or a field closely related that focuses on the use and maintenance of studio production and recording equipment plus one (1) year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent in the development and production of media programs which must have involved the use and operation of both audio and visual equipment; or

 

B. Five (5) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent in the development and production of media programs which must have involved the use and operation of both audio and visual equipment; or

 

C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limit of (A) and (B).
