DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

This work involves responsibility for a variety of activities that frees the President and members of the Syracuse Common Council from those tasks necessary for the effective operation of the Common Council. Under the general direction of the President of the Common Council, the employee is responsible for the day to day activity of the office of the Common Council. Supervision is exercised over a small number of clerical personnel. Assignments are received verbally and in writing from the President of the Common Council and review upon completion. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Act as the personal and confidential officer to the President of the Common Council performing routine office functions associated with the work generated by the President and other Council members, coordinate and arrange appointment schedules for the Councilors.

 

Supervise clerical staff engaged in performing clerical duties, involving maintaining a various clerical reports and typing reports and correspondence relate to the Common Council.

 

Provides constituent services such as investigating and answering questions or complaints from the public regarding the functions and services of the Common Council, city departments, and other public and private agencies.

 

Requisition and maintain stock level of office supplies, materials and equipment.

 

Screens telephone calls and develops correspondence on policy and procedure related to the Common Council.

 

Coordinate with the Finance Department the payment of vouchers and travel requisitions.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of management and public administration.

 

Good knowledge of general office terminology, procedures, and practices.

 

Good knowledge of the applications and use of office equipment, such as copiers, word processors and personal computers.

 

Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
