LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST
The work involves responsibility for the coordination, operation and minor maintenance of all the library's computer and audiovisual equipment. The primary emphasis of the position consists of training and rendering of advice and/or technical assistance in the usage of microcomputers and their software to library personnel as well as the library patrons. An individual in this position is responsible for reviewing, analyzing and developing specifications for the implementation and utilization of various microcomputer library services. The work is performed under the general supervision of an Assistant Library Director I with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgement. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. Does related work as required.
Assists library staff and patrons in the use of microcomputers and software.
Operates and maintains the library's electronic bulletin board service.
Instructs staff and patrons in the use of the available software in the library.
Performs preventative maintenance on all of the library's computers and audiovisual equipment.
Sets up and maintains various databases for the library staff.
Investigates, reviews and makes recommendations to the Library Director on microcomputer hardware and software purchases for microcomputers.
May write new basic programs or modify existing basic programs.
Assists patrons in the use of audio-visual equipment.
May assist the Library Director in the purchase of audio-visual equipment.
May photograph and/or videotape special library events at the request of the Director.
May produce audio visual presentations and/or slide/tape shows for staff training, patron education and public relations purposes.
Good knowledge of the use and operation of an electronic microcomputer and related peripheral equipment.
Working knowledge of Basic computer language.
Working knowledge of standard audio-visual equipment including but not limited to video cassette recorder and camera.
Ability to operate a microcomputer with disk drive and dot matrix printer.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to train others in the use of microcomputers.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
A. Successful completion of three (3) Carnegie units at the high school level (such as BOCES or equivalent technical school) or six (6) semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college, university or technical school in computer operation, microcomputer operation, Basic programming
or a closely related field; or,
B. Six (6) months of work experience, or its part-time equivalent in the operation and/or minor maintenance of computers (microcomputers, minicomputers or main frame computer systems) which must have included some programming duties as a function of the work; or
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
