DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing routine inspection, repair and cleaning tasks on 16mm films, videotapes, and similar media. Work is carried out by following established procedures and involves the use of various audio-visual inspection and repair machines. Operation of these machines is learned on the job; no prior knowledge is required. General supervision is received from an Administrative Superior who allows incumbents to perform routine tasks independently. Supervision is not exercised by an employee in this class. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Inspects films, videotapes and other media returned to the resource library using inspection equipment to determine the type and extent of damage and need for repair.

Repairs 16mm films using either a Cine Care Taping machine for minor damage or by cutting and inserting replacement footage using a splicing machine for more extensive damage to maintain film quality and usability; complex repairs are referred to the supervisor.

Cleans films on an automatic cleaning machine at appropriate time intervals or when inspection shows cleaning is warranted.

Files and shelves media returned to the resource library in their correct location according to a simple numerical coding system.

Removes media from storage shelves and places on delivery rack as directed by daily routing schedules.

Reports seriously damaged media and machinery breakdowns to the supervisor.

Makes copies of videotapes from master tape.

May assist other departmental personnel by performing clerical, computer and manual tasks involved in the efficient use of film and audio-visual media as a curriculum resource.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Ability to inspect, clean and repair 16mm films including the basic techniques of splicing, taping and inserting footage.

Ability to file and retrieve according to simple numerical code.

Ability to follow simple oral and written directions.

Ability to learn and perform tasks assigned.

Skill in the use of film care machinery including splicing, taping, and inspection machines.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
