LITERACY COORDINATOR 07665 (Competitive)
The work involves responsibility for coordinating, organizing, and directing the Onondaga County Public Library’s literacy program. An employee in this position works in concert with community groups, outside literacy programs, and other county agencies to promote and expand literacy programming. The Literacy Coordinator reports to administrative supervisor who allows independence in the performance of job responsibilities. An employee in this position may oversee the work of part-time staff assigned to the program. Does related work as required.
Develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, programs, and procedures for library literacy services;
Responsible for collection development of adult and family literacy materials;
Supervises the Verizon Literacy Lab;
Implements family literacy projects in conjunction with youth services librarian;
Develops and maintains partnerships with community organizations and childcare centers to secure the library’s role in developing early literacy skill;
Supports existing literacy activities of the branch and suburban libraries;
Expands literacy services to other County libraries;
Coordinates systems-wide literacy activities;
Partners with other county agencies where appropriate;
Arranges, coordinates and/or conducts training sessions for volunteer tutors and learners in the use of library resources,
Serves as library’s liaison to community literacy groups,
Speaks to community groups and conducts television and/or radio interviews,
Creates public relations recruitment materials such as brochures, flyers, videos, and newsletters;
Writes press releases;
Plans, coordinates, supervises and conducts literacy specials events and participates in library special events as appropriate;
Collaborates with area organizations and businesses in order to promote and expand literacy services and programs;
Proposes programs and projects to meet identified needs, develops, implements, oversees and evaluates grant projects;
Plans, organizes, directs, supervises and reviews work of grant-funded literacy positions;
Assesses effectiveness of services and programs by developing surveys and conduction periodic progress visits with program participants and implements changes in response to results;
Monitors new developments in the literacy field, incorporates new developments into programs and services.

Good knowledge of principles and practices of adult and family literacy services including learning disabilities in the adult populations.
Good knowledge of principles and practices of project management and administration.
Good understanding of library literacy objectives and procedures.
Good knowledge of principles and techniques of position customer service and public relations.
Computer proficiency.
Ability to demonstrate and awareness and appreciations of a diverse community, interactive and communicating successful with people from a variety of backgrounds both individually and in groups.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with adult learners and their families, volunteers, tutors, library staff and a wide variety of community professionals and organizations.
Ability to elicit community and organizational support for programs,
Ability to plan, organizes, implement, and evaluate service programs, and activities.
Ability to recognize successful methods and programs for teaching literacy skills and adapt them to the needs of adults and families in the literacy program.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to develop appropriate and effective collections and resources within literacy services.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Baccalaureate Degree in education, social work, public administration or related field and six (6) months of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the coordination of an adult or family literacy program, or;
Four (4) years of professional or paraprofessional work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in education, social work, public administration or related field, six (6) months of which must be in the coordination of an adult or family literacy program, or;
An equivalent combination as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
