DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves the design and construction of web sites and web pages, including user interface layout, visual design, information architecture, and navigation. An employee in this class coordinates the work of web site administrators, content contributors, programming and technical staff to create web content. Work is performed under the general direction of a department head, director or manager. Supervision is not a function of this class. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Maintains internal and external websites, including problem resolution and routine maintenance checks for obsolete or outdated content.

Coordinates the work of website administrators, content contributors, programming and technical staff to create web content.

Designs and configures internal and external websites.

Works with departmental staff to assist with short and long range project planning related to the development and support web solutions.

Reviews sites and web pages, ensuring adherence to organization standards.

Researches and evaluates new technologies that support the organization’s communications strategies and goals.

Designs and develops web page layout for informational and application interfaces.

 

WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE CITY OF SYRACUSE

 

Building and testing aesthetic, functional and user-friendly websites.

Implementing and ensuring website security and data protection.

Manages web development projects as they relate to city websites, it’s platforms, and content management systems.

Determining client website needs and requirements.

Maintaining, updating, and optimizing servers.

Monitoring and analyzing site performance.

Updating website content and reviewing SEO.

Addressing and responding to user comments and complaints as they relate to site functionality, usability, accessibility, and troubleshooting.

Thorough knowledge and experience in developing and maintaining web sites and web content.

Thorough knowledge of web design, coding and testing techniques.

Ability to analyze, tune and optimize web sites.

Thorough knowledge of project planning, task management, estimating assignments and scope of work.

Ability to monitor industry trends and technologies in order to recommend and apply these technologies as they emerge.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree or higher in Computer Science or closely related field and two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the analysis, testing, and implementation of web design and development; or,

  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associate’s degree in Computer Science or closely related field and four (4) years of work experience or its part time equivalent in the analysis, testing, and implementation of web design and development; or,

  3. Six (6) years of work experience or its part time equivalent in the analysis, testing, and implementation of web design and development.

Note: Certification as a valid Professional Webmaster, Web Designer, Web Developer, Web Administrator or a closely related professional certification may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience as noted above.
