DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for supervising the operation of an automated typing center in the production and distribution of typewritten material. Under the general direction of an administrative superior, an employee in this class is responsible for training, planning, scheduling and assigning the work of Word Processing Machine Operators. This position is subject to general administrative and policy controls with considerable latitude in the development of schedules, priorities, and workflow procedures, including the orientation of departments and individuals in the use of the facility. General supervision is exercised over a number of Word Processing Machine Operators. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans, schedules, and assigns work of Word Processing Machine Operators.
Establishes and maintains a procedure manual for the operation of equipment and production of materials for center employees and a manual of instructions for users.
Consults with facility users concerning existing or planned procedures for the most effective use of word processing services.
Orders supply and maintain simple inventory records.
Confers with administration in planning for use of equipment and personnel.
May personally perform the transcription and typing of letters, reports, minutes, directories, charts, newspapers, and other typewritten materials, using an automatic typewriter and other word processing equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of business English, punctuation and spelling.
Thorough knowledge of standard office terminology, procedures and clerical techniques
Good knowledge of word processing equipment and its functions.
Same knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to supervise subordinate employees.
Ability to plan set priorities and assigns work.
Ability to train employees in the use of automatic typing and word processing equipment and in procedures governing methods of work and work flow and use of facility.
Ability to write and modify procedures and methods of work, workflow and use of facility.
Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with facility users.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion:
Two (2) years of permanent competitive status in the title of Word Processing Machine Operator.
Open Competitive:
Two (2) years of full‑time clerical work experience, or its part‑time equivalent, which must have included the use of word processing equipment as the major function of the job.
NOTE: Completion of six (6) credit hours (or nine quarter credit hours) in Word Processing courses or Office Machines courses including word processing machines from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or business school may be substituted for six (6) months or work experience.
