DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Operates automatic typing equipment and related components. Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the operation of an automatic typing system including magnetic card, magnetic tape typewriters and word processors, the latter being a mini‑computer and high-speed printer combination. Assignments are given through recorded dictation or in rough draft form with general instructions, allowing some degree of latitude in the final product. Depending upon the location of assignment, routine assignments may, follow present standards with supervision available as needed and are not constantly reviewed or checked; or, all assignments may be scheduled by the Supervisor. An employee in this class does not exercise supervision. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Selects and inserts program cards, tapes and forms as needed into an automatic typewriter or word processor.
Enters instruction codes and copy on program cards, tapes and diskettes by using an automatic typewriter or word processor.
Transcribes from dictating equipment and rough or final copy a wide variety of technical, financial and statistical reports, memoranda, correspondence, manuals, directories and other material.
Makes grammatical corrections and supplies or corrects punctuation for dictated copy by coding machine to add or delete information.
Check accuracy of dictated materials by listening to recording while reading the typed material.
Verifies addresses, titles, dates, names and similar information by comparing dictated copy with typed copy.
Decides, from among several standards in the facility, upon a format for the dictated copy by relying upon own initiative or subject to supervisor's approval.
May collate final project.
Proofreads final copy.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of business English, punctuation and spelling.
Good knowledge of commonly accepted formats used in reports and correspondence.
Ability to type accurately at a rate of 50 words per minute on an automated typing system.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions regarding final format and related areas, material that has been dictated or given as rough draft.
Ability to make visual comparison between typed and written copy to identify errors in transcription, grammar or punctuation.
Ability to organize a work load for the highest productivity.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co‑workers and users of the system.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion:
One (1) year of continuous permanent competitive status in the title of Typist I or Stenographer I.
Open‑Competitive:
A. One (1) year of full time clerical work experience which shall have involved typing as the major function of the job; or,
B. Successful completion of a course in automated typing systems or word processing systems.
