DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for undergoing training in the review and analysis of detailed computer systems specifications and the preparation of the program instructions. Under close and immediate supervision an employee in this class undergoes on‑the‑job training and formal classroom instruction in the review and analysis of detailed computer systems specifications and the preparation of the program instructions. Work involves formal classroom instruction from technical and professional personnel on computer equipment and computer languages. The employee is required to utilize knowledge gained through class instruction while on-the-job. No supervision is exercised in this position. Assignments are received and reviewed by a programming supervisor.

An employee, upon successful completion of the designated formal and "on the job” training program, functions at the performance level of a Programmer I and if appointed from an appropriate civil service list is not required to compete for the Programmer I classification. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Codes program instructions.

Assists in preparing test data, test runs and debugs program.

Assists in the documentation of all procedures used throughout the system.

Learns use and capabilities of computer system.

General knowledge of computing hardware.

Working knowledge of a variety of programming languages.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

A. Successful completion of nine (9) semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, business school, or trade school in information technology, programming, or computer science; or,

B. One (1) year of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in information technology; or,

C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
