DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for supervising the activities of a mainframe or centralized processing environment. Under the general supervision of an administrative superior, an employee in this class is responsible for a shift of computer room operations, including the supervision of subordinates such as Console Operators, Peripheral Equipment Operators and other subordinate support staff. The employee in this classification is responsible for the day to day production operation of the mainframe(s) and the related peripheral equipment and may be responsible for the associated flow of input and output processes using such equipment. The work may also involve the responsibility for the manual and computerized scheduling of all job streams; this includes any modifications and adjustments required to insure that all work has been processed correctly in a timely manner. Other duties include the scheduling of subordinate staff to meet production schedules and the ability to follow and adjust practices and procedures to maintain maximum productivity of available mainframe processes and peripherals with minimal error in content. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Assists in the planning, organizing and developing of procedures for a data processing computer room engaged in the volume production of a variety of various production data, statistical information and reports.

Supervises and trains Console Operators, Peripheral Equipment Operators and other subordinate support staff assigned to the various types of equipment and processes.

Carries out approved procedures required to provide for the secure operation and backup of software and data; these procedures may include the ability to adjust current job streams to bypass a malfunction.

Determines hardware or software malfunctions and reports them to the appropriate vendors and/or department managers/supervisor; may insure the timely entry and update of these events into an electronic online problem and change management system.

May maintain physical inventory of computer supplies.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the operation, adjustments and maintenance of typical data processing equipment such as mainframes, disk and tape drives, high volume printers and related machines.

Good knowledge of the principles, practices and standards of a modern data processing computer room.

Ability to adapt to changing departmental needs and develop operational processing procedures for such needs.

Ability to supervise and instruct Console Operators, Peripheral Equipment Operators and subordinate support staff on appropriate procedures and the operation of equipment.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Console Operator.

Open-Competitive:

Four (4) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in computer operations.
