DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for software maintenance through vendor supplied updates to program products as well as to in‑house modifications to system software. An administrative superior exercises direct supervision over this position. An employee in this class does not exercise supervision. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Maintains up-to-date knowledge about systems software supplied by the manufacturer.

Analyzes new and modified software in relation to installation requirements.

Implements new systems software and modifications in a manner not adversely affecting current production and testing and with minimum impact on development activities.

Analyzes current systems software, proposed modification and new software for impact on installation problems, standards and procedures.

Maintains a sample set of installation programs that are used to test effects of new or modified system software.

Tests new or modified system software, using sample set, and analyzes results.

Prepares instructional material for systems designers, programmers and operations that describe affects‑and new requirements resulting from changes to system software.

Analyzes production or testing problem to determine whether they are caused by systems software malfunction and makes corrections where required.

Assists in data security administration.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES SKILLS_ ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of data processing centers current operating systems.

Good knowledge of file organization, job control language, and data security considerations.

Good knowledge of program products and their uses.

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of software installation and the configuration of personal computers.

Working knowledge of the various system software in use.

Ability to learn new methods and new operating systems.

Ability to communicate effectively, both written as well as orally.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Open-Competitive:

 

Three (3) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in software support and maintenance and software installation.
