DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for performing regularly scheduled routine preventative maintenance on, and installation of, computer equipment such as personal computers, printers, network connectivity, common PC software, and other related peripherals and/or hardware. An employee in this class is responsible for the diagnosis and repair of routine problems with computer boards, hard disks, monitors and printers. Work is performed on equipment at a primary business center or on field visits in other offices. Supervision is received from an administrative superior in the Information Technology department. Supervision of other employees is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Installs, checks and tests new computer equipment for reliability.
Diagnoses problems with the computer equipment and ascertains the best and most cost- effective method(s) for solving them.
Troubleshoots and repairs problems with computer boards, hard disks, monitors and peripherals.
Advises administrative supervisor in the Information Technology department when problems exist which cannot be repaired.
Solves problems associated with software compatibility.
Installs hardware and software upgrades.
Completes required forms and maintains a variety of records.
Acquires basic knowledge of commonly used software to facilitate problem determination.
Assists in the task of problem/change recording and editing.
Keeps current with changing computer technology.

Good knowledge of principles and practices of diagnosis, maintenance and repair of personal computers, hard disks, and electronic components.
Good knowledge in the operation of personal computers and their operating systems.
Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Ability to work with others in a "team" environment; strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to maintain various records and record keeping systems.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents with a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or Computer Science or a closely related field; or,
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents with an Associate's degree in Information Technology or Computer Science or a closely related field and one (1) year of work experience, or its part time equivalent in the repair and maintenance of microcomputer systems; or,
C. Completion of a course in technical computer repair from a recognized technical business or training school and two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of microcomputer systems.
