GENERAL STATEMEFT OF DUTIES
Performs professional auditing work by assisting the city auditor in directing a continuous post audit of the municipality's accounts; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This is important professional work involving responsibility for auditing the accounts of the city in accordance with a prescribed procedure. The city auditor is available for consultation on difficult problems that arise, but the deputy auditor is responsible for seeing that departmental orders are carried out for interpreting and carrying out provisions of the law. The deputy city auditor is responsible for analyzing accounting procedures and recommending changes therein.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Assists the city auditor in discharging his duties.
Plans and assigns work to each employee.
Plans and revises form, books, and procedures.
Assists employees in balancing and checking books and accounts.
Consults with various department heads.
Makes and supervises field audits of each city agency.
Prepares a tentative draft of the city auditor's annual report.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of governmental accounting and auditing.
Good knowledge of the organization and functions of the municipal government.
Especial ability to critically evaluate financial and other business records and to detect irregularities.
Ability to make difficult accounting analysis and to prepare clear and concise financial reports and statements.
Initiative and resourcefulness in the solution of complex accounting and auditing problems.
Three years of experience in a highly responsible supervisory position in a finance or auditing department, or in the Bureau of Municipal Accounts in the office of the State Comptroller or in the conduct of an accounting and auditing department or concern and graduation from a recognized college or university with major work in accounting; or,
A satisfactory equivalent combination in education and experience.
