DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The Senior Executive Assistant serves as a personal and confidential assistant to the County Executive. The work is completed under the direct supervision of the County Executive. The position requires interaction with co-workers, local, state and federal government employees and legislators, high-ranking local, state and federal elected officials, department heads, travel agents, the media, businesses, law enforcement agencies and the general public. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Handles correspondence for the County Executive, including opening, distributing and sorting mail, typing correspondence and preparing memoranda.

Receives and places phone calls for the County Executive, including handling complaint calls and resolving problems.

Assists in scheduling meetings and organizing travel for the County Executive.

Assists in processing news releases issued by the County Executive and publishes releases on the internet.

Types the annual Budget Message and the annual State of the County Address, along with all related materials.

Thorough knowledge of the purposes, principles, terminology and practices employed in an office environment.

Thorough knowledge of local and state law, procedures and policies as they relate to the mission of the department.

Working knowledge of Onondaga County government, geography, economics, demographics, society, goals, politics, policies and procedures.

Working knowledge of the purposes, principles, terminology and practices employed in the media, journalism and public relations.

Working knowledge of a wide variety of media and public relations concepts, including political speechwriting, ethics and public speaking.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to operate and interact with political and social sensitivity in the interpretation and discussion of high-tension disputes, conflicts and complaints.

Ability to operate basic computer hardware and software applications.
