DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for performing stenographic, typing and clerical tasks of a routine nature. The work primarily involves taking routine shorthand dictation and transcribing notes in typewritten form. Work also requires the performance of clerical duties that follow established procedures. Detailed instructions and direct supervision are received at the beginning of work and on new assignments, although regular routine assignments may be performed independently with more initiative and judgment utilized as experience is gained. Assignments to the employee include use of standard office equipment. A superior upon completion for content and accuracy reviews the work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Takes dictation of ordinary difficulty and transcribes notes in typewritten form; may transcribe from a dictating machine.
Uses a manual or electric typewriter, or any type of computerized equipment with a word processing function to transcribe dictation notes and to type documents from rough or corrected copy.
Receives, sorts and distributes mail and performs other routine clerical work or record keeping tasks.
Composes routine correspondence in accordance with standardized office procedures and practices.
Checks and proofreads typed copy.
Gives routine information regarding departmental procedures and types routine letters or form letters to answer written inquires.
May operate a variety of office equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of general office terminology, procedures, and equipment and clerical techniques.
Working knowledge of business English and spelling.
Skill in taking and transcribing dictation at a reasonable rate of speed.
Skills in typing accurately from rough draft clear copy or a dictating machine at a reasonable rate of speed.
Ability to learn how to operate a variety of typing equipment which may include automated typing systems, word processors, micro-computers and word processing software.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to departmental routines.
Ability to perform clerical operations with letters and numbers.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
