DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS


The work involves responsibility for transcribing educational materials into braille for visually impaired students. An employee in this class brailles print material and creates tactile adaptations of visual aides for use with academic subject matter. The work also involves responsibility for transcribing student generated work from braille into print for review by classroom teacher. An employee in this class works closely with visually impaired students in classroom settings. The incumbent works under the general supervision of an administrative superior. Does related work as required.



TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES


Transcribes classroom materials (texts, worksheets, tests, etc.) into braille on special paper, using a braille code form and a hand stylus or braille typewriter to impress in the paper the various combinations of dots that characterize braille letters and numbers.

Transcribes student generated work from braille into print for review by classroom teacher.

Creates tactile adaptations of visual aides for use with academic subject matter.

Prepares manipulative materials consistent with lesson content to facilitate students participation and understanding.



FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS


Working knowledge of braille techniques.

Skill in the use of braille.

Ability to accurately transcribe material into braille.

Ability to establish good relationships with the students and teachers.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A) Successful completion of a braille training program; or,

B) Six (6) months of experience, or its part time equivalent, in preparing or transcribing braille materials.
