DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for supervising and coordinating the fire fighting and fire prevention activities of fire companies within an assigned fire district. Under general supervision, an incumbent in this class also oversees the proper maintenance of firehouses and equipment. Work is reviewed through conferences and occasional inspections. Supervision is exercised over a large number of subordinates. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Responds to fire alarms within his district and to such other fires as he may be called in accordance with established procedures.
Relieves fire captains of command upon arrival at a fire and directs all fire fighting and lifesaving activities until relieved of command by a superior officer.
Determines and directs the proper deployment of his companies at the scene of a fire.
Determines the necessity for additional fire fighting companies and notifies the fire dispatcher of such requirements.
Performs fire prevention duties, including building inspections and code enforcement.
Supervises the fire prevention activities of companies in all assigned districts.
Trains and advises companies in fire prevention matters.
Periodically visits each company within the district to inspect personnel, equipment, apparatus, quarters, and reports.
Makes periodic reports as needed; uses a computer to prepare and write departmental, administrative and other reports as needed.
Supervises the training and drilling of companies.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of fire fighting principles, practices and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the fire department and of the laws under which it operates.
Good knowledge of fire prevention laws and ordinances.
Good knowledge of training practices and techniques.
Good knowledge of the geography of the city, location of fire hydrants and water mains and of the major fire hazards located in the city.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action in emergencies.
Ability to lead firefighters and give effective orders.
Ability to maintain discipline and high morale.
Ability to prepare technical and administrative reports.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Six (6) months of permanent competitive class status in the title of Fire Captain.
